General information about IASTM tool

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation or better known as IASTM, is a new treatment method for professional therapist. It is a treatment method to locate and treat fascia dysfunctions in common musculoskeletal complaints.
The IASTM treatment method has a lot in common with the traditional Gua Sha treatment method. In the last few years the IASTM method has been growing rapidly in popularity due its effectiveness and its applicability.

So how does IASTM work?

After an injury occurred the body starts to heal. During this healing process scar tissue might be formed. Scar tissue is known to be different compared to skin, muscle, ligament or tendon tissue. Adhesions may result after surgery and/or from a period of immobilization. The (healed) tissue will be formed irregular and dysfunctional. These limitations in tissue functionality could be the cause of movement impairments, pain, reduced flexibility and decreased muscle strength.
IASTM tools are therefore used to release these adhesions and regain functionality. It is suggested to use IASTM in combination with other treatment modalities for the best treatment outcome.

The treatment in general should not be painful at all. It is known though that your skin might feel a little uncomfortable after the treatment session or the disappearing of painful sensations. Usually after IASTM treatment an improvement of function will be noticed.
